Brussels Jazz Alert

Brussels-based trio Schroothoop (Dutch for 'junk yard') make music with homemade instruments built from lost and found objects like scrap wood, old metal or anything that would end up in a landfill. The band's jazz music is infused with sounds from around the world, orchestrated by PVC flute melodies, jerry can beats and washtub bass lines.

"On the street you come across very diverse sounds; my neighbor listens to bad Balkan, on my bike I hear some rai or some chaabi from a passing car or in Schaerbeek you can hear more Turkish music."
